Mission Statement

To provide a variety of safe, attractive, outdoor recreation facilities and municipal grounds,
quality leisure opportunities, non-vehicular transportation routes and the preservation of our community greenbelts to exceed our customer’s expectations.

About the Organization

The city of Rockwall Parks and Recreation Department is a small department that does huge things. The department consists of the Manager, the Recreation Superintendent, the Parks Superintendent, and the sports and recreation coordinators. The team works together to meet the multiple needs of all the citizens of Rockwall. They manage activities and programs for families, kids, and senior citizens. It has been great working with an upbeat team that love what they do. I would recommend anyone interested to apply for an internship here at the city of Rockwall Parks and Recreation Department.

Job Description

The Parks and Recreation Intern assists the recreation coordinator in creating and implementing special events. They also participate in doing a lot of spreadsheets in excel and making phone calls to vendors and organizations to participate in the upcoming events. They need to lead the Parks and Recreation aids that will be working the special events and also working the rentals and other minor jobs. The Intern also checks on the aquatic side of things and makes sure that the lifeguards are up to their Red Cross training, that the pools are running smoothly, and that the swim lessons are being executed correctly.

New Skills and Accomplishments

I have become more skilled in using excel and programming for events. My public communication has improved since I had to speak in front of a big audience during the concert by the lakes. I was able to plan and execute the 4th of July parade; even though everything did not go according to plan I was able to work under pressure and handle the situation. I am pleased with this internship and all the new things that I have learned.

Requirements and Qualifications

The qualifications for this job are knowledge of basic programming and planning, excellent costumer service, and basic Microsoft Excel skills. The requirements are to be pursuing a bachelor degree in recreation, parks or any related fields.

The Benefits

Since this is a small department, you get to experience and be a part of almost all the activities and events that the department puts on. The job is upbeat and I got to do a lot of stuff outdoors. They pay $10 an hour, however you will have to find your own place to live. I lived with my friend's parents which worked out really well. I know that there are multiple Airbnb options if that is the route that you want to take. My boss, the recreation superintendent, is an Aggie, class of 2011 WHOOP! Even though I might not get a job at this specific department, I know that this experience will help me to get another job elsewhere. The Aggie network is one of the best.
